A new indicator for managing performance of IT Operations
ORSYP THINK TANK, a shared vision of 20 IT decision-makers highlights an indicator from industry to manage the Performance of IT Operations.
Paris, 21 June 2011 - ORSYP Institute, Centre of Excellence dedicated to IT Operations Management, has announced today the findings of the ORSYP Think Tank, an 2010 initiative that brought together 20 managers from most sectors of activity around the concept of IT operations Performance.
The group's ambition was to establish a common vision of the Performance of IT Operations that can be challenged, amended and adopted by the majority of IT Operations managers.
In a world where a company's strategy must develop quickly, the IT Operations Manager is asked to be an Industrial Manager, able to set his targets and those of his subcontractors, and manage his production not only in terms of Quality but more broadly according to Performance. The Performance Indicators currently available to IT Operations are primarily indicators of Quality of Service.
IT Operations Management is based on two main aspects: Quality of Service and costs. At a time when Performance Management is becoming critical, IT operations show the need for a third management aspect, that of efficiency.
A lack of productivity indicators...
IT Operations Departments are now largely aware of the importance of Performance and, for many, improving productivity is an on-going priority target. Areas for improvement are however, increasingly hard to find and managers today feel the need for efficiency indicators to help identify and decide on new productivity initiatives.
Managing Performance: Inspiration from industrial methods
The Think Tank concentrated its attention on the way that Industry controls waste to increase Output. Using a composite indicator for this purpose has emerged as a unique method in the current management of IT Operations.
Overall Equipment Effectiveness or OEE is the indicator that allows Industry to manage Performance. This indicator is, from among the set of industrial principles presented to the Think Tank, the one that was identified as the most appropriate to pursue.
ORSYP Think Tank Report
The study of the relevance and feasibility of OEE for IT Operations is the main purpose of the "Managing the Performance of IT Operations" white paper, the result of a process that has the stated aim of being shared, practical and visionary.
This white paper resulting from the ORSYP Think Tank focuses on a performance indicator taken from the industrial world, OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness), whose application in IT is new.
A real breakthrough in the Performance Management of IT Operations, it simultaneously combines Quality, Availability and Performance.
ORSYP Think Tank: Work in 2011
In 2011, the group will focus on its operational implementation by placing OEE in real conditions for applying it to IT Operations through a new goal: measuring OEE on a pilot project set up in common by members of the Think Tank.
